Summer Fields School

A new extension was added to the side of the existing historic building Newton Lodge, previously a boarding house for Summer Fields Preparatory School, to create a new Pre-Prep school for children ages 4-7.  The existing building was fully refurbished to create new classrooms and flexible teaching spaces, with the extension providing additional space and a new staircase to ensure good access and safe means of escape from the first floor at both ends of the building.

The extension was designed to both contrast and complement the existing Victorian building, using similar geometry and high ceilings, but with copper rainscreen cladding applied to the extension to create a clean modern look which will oxidise and change as the building ages.  The garden of Newton Lodge was transformed into an exciting playground for the children, comprising a range of equipment to suit the age range. Extensive external works were included to the main school grounds to integrate the scheme with the existing nearby school buildings and to provide formalised parking areas. A new vehicle access route, drop off and parking areas were provided to remove parents vehicles from the street.

ESDP had full M&E design duties providing gas fired central heating and mechanical ventilation to toilet areas, electrical services were low energy LED lighting, new fire alarm system, new intruder, access control and CCTV system to ensure safety for the students.
