Project Details
Formal House dates from the Victorian era when it was the depository for a removal and storage company, Barnaby Bendall & Co (1839-1976). In the 1980’s and 90’s, it was divided into self-storage units and was home to Pockets Snooker Club. The building has now been transformed into contemporary urban office space with a new glass fronted extension, meeting rooms, a secure cycle store, changing facilities and breakout areas including a landscaped courtyard, which doubles as event space.
The sympathetic refurbishment of this 5 storey brick built storage warehouse won the Cheltenham Borough Council and Civic Society Annual Award for integrating as many original features as possible to create vibrant and unique workspaces with an additional fully glazed office extension in the courtyard to make optimal use of the site.
The courtyard has been fully reimagined incorporating tiered seating areas, dramatic external lighting and hard landscaping including an innovative cycle ramp to maximise the external courtyard as an extension of the work/social spaces created within the building.
Low energy light fittings have been carefully selected to compliment and show off the Victorian character of the building.
