Project Details
The new state-of-the-art teaching centre for health and medical students at the University of Worcester. Named after Elizabeth Garrett Anderson, the first woman to qualify as a physician and surgeon in the UK, the building provides outstanding facilities for the University’s health students.
Low and Zero Carbon technologies were utilised throughout the building in line with the University’s environmental and sustainability ethos, which delivered both an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) A rating, and SKA Gold.
ESDP were employed to complete RIBA Stage 4 – design to the Cafeteria & Kitchen and Stage 5 design for the whole building working closely with the mechanical and electrical contractors. The project achieved BIM level 2 with ESDP delivering an information rich model used to generate all production, coordination & asset management information.
The project consisted of roof top air handling units with high efficiency heat exchangers serving a variable air volume ventilation system. The domestic hot water requirement was met using local hot water heaters with two air source heat pumps serving a mix of traditional and fan assisted heat emitters.
Electrically, the project used energy saving LED light fittings with intelligent sensors that control light output to maximise daylight use and minimise wasted energy.
Access control and security systems were provided to ensure a safe environment was provided.
Photovoltaic Solar panels are placed strategically on the south facing side of the north lights to generate electricity all year round.
